1st Midrand Scouts in the News
We are very proud to see members of 1st Midrand Scout Group featured in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette following their participation in the 82nd anniversary commemoration of the Warsaw Flights.
The commemorative service was held at the Katyn Memorial in James and Ethel Gray Park on 5 September 2026. It honoured the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the South African airmen who undertook perilous missions to deliver supplies to the Polish resistance during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.
Remembering Extraordinary Courage
The Warsaw Flights were among the most dangerous aerial operations of the Second World War. Aircrews flew long distances over hostile territory, facing enemy aircraft and heavy anti-aircraft fire as they attempted to drop desperately needed supplies to those fighting for the liberation of Warsaw.
Many of these young airmen did not return.
The annual commemoration ensures that their bravery, and the sacrifice of the Polish people during the uprising, are not forgotten. It also reflects the enduring friendship between South Africa and Poland, forged through courage and shared sacrifice during one of history’s darkest periods.
The service included the national anthems of South Africa and Poland, a South African Air Force guard of honour, addresses by representatives of several nations and a formal wreath-laying ceremony. Martin Urry, chairperson of the Warsaw Flights Commemoration Committee, delivered the opening remarks.
Our Scouts in Service
Aashirya Sundarlal, Olivia Urry and patrol leader Tyler Kilbee represented 1st Midrand Scout Group at the commemoration and assisted with the proceedings as dignitaries paid tribute to the fallen.
Speaking to the Rosebank Killarney Gazette, Aashirya said that she was honoured to help at such an important anniversary.
Their participation was an opportunity to experience history beyond the classroom and to contribute personally to an occasion of national and international significance. Through their service, they demonstrated important Scout values including respect, responsibility, remembrance and service to others.

The Warsaw Flights commemoration received prominent coverage in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette, leading the newspaper’s front page and continuing onto page two.
The second part of the article included a photograph of Aashirya, Olivia and Tyler, together with recognition of the role played by 1st Midrand Scouts during the ceremony.
We are delighted to see our young people acknowledged in this way. More importantly, we are proud of the manner in which they represented our Scout Group while helping to preserve the memory of those whose bravery and sacrifice should never be forgotten.
