Volunteer at 1st Midrand Scout Group
Help us give young people the adventure of a lifetime
1st Midrand Scout Group is run entirely by volunteers. Our adult volunteers make it possible for children and young people across Midrand to enjoy adventure, learn practical skills, grow in confidence and become responsible members of their communities.
You do not need to have been a Scout, and you do not need to know how to pitch a tent or tie every knot. What matters most is a willingness to contribute, work as part of a team and help create a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment for our young people.
Whether you can assist regularly or only from time to time, there is a place for you at 1st Midrand.
Ways you can get involved
Become an adult leader
Our adult leaders plan and present programmes, teach skills, organise games and activities, and support our young people as they progress through Scouting.
You could volunteer with one of our three sections:
- Meerkats: boys and girls aged 5–6 years, meeting on Saturday mornings.
- Cubs: boys and girls aged 7–10 years, meeting on Saturday mornings.
- Scouts: young people aged 11–17 years, meeting on Friday evenings.
Adult leaders receive guidance, support and access to training through SCOUTS South Africa. You do not need to arrive with all the necessary skills—we will help you learn as you go.
Share a skill
You may have a hobby, profession or practical skill that could enrich one of our programmes. We welcome people who can help our members learn about subjects such as:
- First aid and personal safety
- Camping, hiking and outdoor skills
- Cooking and pioneering
- Science, technology and engineering
- Arts, crafts, music and drama
- Environmental awareness and conservation
- Navigation, mapping and communications
- Citizenship, careers and community service
You could assist with a single activity, a particular badge or a short series of programmes without becoming a regular section leader.
Help at camps, outings and events
Extra adult support is invaluable when we organise camps, hikes, community projects, fundraising activities and family events. Volunteers may assist with transport, catering, equipment, administration, supervision, photography or the practical arrangements that keep an event running smoothly.
Join the Parent Committee
The Parent Committee supports the management and long-term development of the Group. Its work includes governance, fundraising, financial oversight, maintenance of the Scout grounds, communications and support for major events.
Parents and other community members with experience in administration, finance, fundraising, marketing, communication, facilities management or project planning can make an important contribution.
Lend a practical hand
Not every volunteer role involves working directly with young people. We also need help with:
- Maintaining and improving our grounds and facilities
- Looking after camping and programme equipment
- Fundraising and sponsorship
- Website and social media content
- Photography and event promotion
- Administration and record-keeping
- Transport and event logistics
- Occasional working parties and community projects
How much time do I need to give?
Volunteering can be flexible. Some of our volunteers help every week, while others assist at occasional programmes, camps or events. We will work with you to find a role that suits your interests, skills and availability.
Even a few hours can make a meaningful difference.
Keeping young people safe
The safety and wellbeing of our members are our highest priorities. Adults who volunteer with the Group must follow the safeguarding, screening, registration and training requirements applicable to their role under the policies of SCOUTS South Africa.
Our leadership team will explain these requirements and guide you through the appropriate process before you begin volunteering.
