Leaping Wolf Resources
The Leaping Wolf is the highest achievement a Cub Scout can earn before moving on to Scouts. It represents the end of a Cub’s trail and the beginning of their next adventure, recognising hard work, commitment, and living the Cub Scout Promise and Law in everyday life.
On this page, you’ll find a collection of resources designed to help Cubs, parents, and Scouters understand the requirements, plan the journey, and celebrate the milestones along the way. These resources include guidance on activities, tips for completing challenges, and support materials to make the Leaping Wolf both an achievable and meaningful experience.
Whether you’re a Cub preparing to take the leap, a parent supporting the journey, or a leader helping Cubs along their path, this section will guide you through everything you need to know about earning the Leaping Wolf badge.
Sandton District Leaping Wolf Guidelines
The Leaping Wolf badge is the highest award a Cub can achieve – a true milestone marking the culmination of their Cub journey. It is the only Cub badge that may be worn on a Scout uniform and must be completed before a Cub’s 11th birthday.
This guideline has been created by the Sandton District Cub Support Team to provide Cubs, parents, and Pack Scouters with practical advice, explanations, and tips to make the Leaping Wolf journey both achievable and meaningful. It does not replace the official requirements in The Cub Trail handbook of Scouts South Africa, but instead complements them by offering clarity and support for each step.
Inside, you’ll find:
- A clear breakdown of requirements such as the Gold Wolf Outdoor Challenge, Scout Craft, Personal Challenge, Technology in Action, Global Awareness, and more.
- Helpful advice on planning, teamwork, and creating the all-important Leaping Wolf Logbook.
- Suggestions and examples to inspire Cubs while ensuring that the work remains their own achievement.
The Leaping Wolf journey builds essential life skills including planning, perseverance, problem-solving, self-confidence, and teamwork. More importantly, it encourages Cubs to “Do Your Best” and take pride in reaching the highest level of Cubbing.
We encourage Cubs to begin their Leaping Wolf as soon as they turn 10 and to embrace the challenge with enthusiasm, knowing that Akela, parents, and the support team will be there every step of the way.
Global Awareness Challenge Ideas
The Global Awareness task for the Leaping Wolf badge requires Cubs to research a global issue (e.g. poverty, conservation, water and sanitation) and demonstrate practical action they can take to help.
Examples of projects:
- Animal Rights – Promote sterilisation, donate food, or fundraise for shelters.
- Climate Change – Create awareness posters, practise water/electricity saving, encourage car-pooling and small lifestyle changes.
- Deforestation – Plant a tree (if not already done under Greening the Community).
- Endangered Animals – Share information with Pack or school, write articles, raise awareness about green belts.
- Literacy – Collect and donate books/stationery to education-focused NPOs.
- Litter – Organise clean-ups, design posters, or set up recycling bins.
- Malaria – Awareness posters, fundraising for mosquito nets.
- Poaching – Awareness campaigns, school talks, fundraising for anti-poaching efforts.
- Poverty – Volunteer at soup kitchens, grow/donate food, bake for shelters.
- Recycling – Start or expand recycling projects at the Scout hall/school.
- Repurposing Clothing – Donate old clothing for repurposing, encourage thrifting.
- Solar Energy – Promote benefits of solar power, fundraise for installations.
- Vaccinations – Raise awareness about importance of vaccines via posters and information drives.
This task encourages Cubs to combine research, creativity, and community action, helping them understand real-world issues while contributing meaningfully to solutions. It reinforces the Cub motto: Do Your Best by ensuring their work makes a positive impact locally while connecting to global concerns.
