Sandton District Cub Camp: The Quest for the Ender Dragon
The weekend of 5–7 September 2025 saw 64 Cubs from across Sandton District gather at Gilwell Scouting Centre for an action-packed Minecraft-themed Cub Camp. Over three days, the Cubs took part in challenges, crafts, wide games, boating, campfires, and spiritual reflection – all woven together in a storyline to defeat the fearsome Ender Dragon.
Opening Adventure
The camp began on Friday afternoon with a Grand Flag Break and Welcome Ceremony, where Cubs were divided into Sixes with epic names: Emerald Enforcers, Gold Guardians, Lapis Legends, Obsidian Oath, Quartz Questers, and Amethyst Avengers. Their first task was a wide game exploring Gilwell, finding hidden Beacon Crystals to unlock the camp’s magical powers. By evening, tents were pitched, “Ender Dragon Burgers” enjoyed, and Cubs settled down for a Minecraft movie night with popcorn.
Saturday Quests
Saturday was filled with adventure bases, each linked to Scouting skills and Minecraft challenges:
- Solar Cooking: building working solar ovens.
- Compass Skills: learning to navigate and later tackling a full compass trail quest.
- Dioramas: crafting miniature Minecraft biomes.
- Gig and Canoe Rides: exploring the lake safely with full water-safety instruction.
- Repairs Badge: Cubs refurbished the fleur-de-lis sign and learned about glues, tools, and fixing broken items.
- Conservation Stoves: making tin stoves and cooking pancakes.
- Trail Signs: learning and laying Scout trails.
- First Aid Fun: making fake wounds while revising real safety.
- Sewing & Knotting: practical skills every Scout needs.
The day culminated in Cubs Own preparation, games, and a Minecraft-themed Campfire Ceremony. Songs such as Alice the Creeper, Boom Chicka Boom (Creeper Style), and B-P Spirit echoed around the fire circle, alongside the story Steve and the Scout’s Torch, reminding Cubs that even the smallest light can chase away fear.
Sunday Finale
On Sunday, Cubs rose early to face their ultimate test: the Defeat the Ender Dragon Game. Working together, they completed challenges to destroy the Ender Crystals and triumph over the dragon. The camp closed with Repairs Badge activities, packing up tents, a reflective Cubs Own service led by the Gold Wolves, and finally the lowering of the flag.
Achievement
The camp was not only fun but also advanced many Cubs along their Scouting journey:
- Silver and Gold Wolf progress in compass work, trail signs, knotting, and water safety.
- Repairs Badge requirements completed, from fixing taps and plugs to repainting and sewing.
- Outdoor living skills: sleeping under canvas, teamwork in Sixes, and learning responsibility.
- Leadership development, with older Cubs leading songs, Cubs Own, and mentoring younger members.
For many, this was their first big camp. They returned home tired but proud, having gained confidence, new skills, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Thanks
A heartfelt thank you to the full team of Scouters, parent helpers, and FLSS Sea Scouts for their dedication. Their planning, catering, safety, and enthusiasm made this camp a shining success.
✨ The Ender Dragon was defeated – but the real victory was in the laughter, learning, and Scouting spirit shared by every Cub who took part.
