Kontiki 2024: A Scorching Success!

This year’s Kontiki was undoubtedly the most anticipated scouting event of the year, and it did not disappoint! With the theme “Shipwrecked,” our team, the DOKOS (inspired by the oldest shipwreck ever discovered), bravely navigated the challenges that came our way.

Having been around since 1984, Kontiki is the biggest and most anticipated scouting event in South Africa. Teams of scouts from all around Gauteng have been drawn to the event from its start, which has only grown in size and popularity. Kontiki is primarily a competitive event where teams are required to plan, construct, and sail a raft that will be assessed based on its seaworthiness and workmanship. Apart from the aquatic events, the festival also offers a supporters’ competition on land, where teams can engage in various spare-time activities (STAs) and food competitions.

Despite the difficulties we faced in the months leading up to the event, we persevered and achieved an impressive 13th place overall and 2nd place in STAs, along with several other awards. This is a remarkable accomplishment, considering it was only our 3rd solo Kontiki!

We are incredibly grateful for the guidance and support of our adult leaders and peers, who helped us reach new heights. We are proud of our team’s resilience, teamwork, and determination, which made this experience truly unforgettable.

As we look to the future, we’re excited to take on new challenges and adventures. Who knows what next year’s Kontiki will bring? Perhaps a journey to the North Pole? One thing is certain – we’re ready for whatever comes next!

Well done, team, and thank you to everyone who made Kontiki 2024 an experience to remember!
